A 78-year-old woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-car collision late Wednesday morning along Plank Road west of Route 47 in Plato Township, officials said.
Susanne Cannella, of Itasca, was pronounced dead at an Elgin hospital, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, Cannella was by herself and traveling west in a 2004 Acura on Plank Road around 11:30 a.m. when a 2015 Nissan traveling east on Plank Road crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting Cannella’s car.
The driver of the Nissan, Daisy Torres, 23, of Elgin, and her passenger Egan Arias, 23, of Elgin, were taken by paramedics to Elgin hospitals, reports stated.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Torres remained hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries. She was listed in stable condition at Advocate Sherman Hospital Thursday afternoon. Arias also remained hospitalized with apparent non life-threatening injuries and was listed in fair condition at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital Thursday afternoon.
Plank Road was closed for about four hours during the crash investigation, officials said, and public safety units from Burlington, Hampshire and Pingree Grove responded to the scene.
The crash remained under investigation Thursday afternoon by members of the Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
Kane County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Office Pat Gengler said the section of road where the accident happened is a straight one, where a no passing zone starts. While not in a construction zone, the crash site is not far from road work being done in Burlington, Gengler said, so currently it is not heavily traveled. The road is known to Elgin area residents as a way to get to and from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Gengler said.
